Letter from Team Digital – Tara

I have a hard drive full of photos to scrap and a mind full of stories to tell. There are scrapbook challenges to complete and contests to enter, as well as magazine calls to answer and half-finished pages to revisit. I want to finish trip albums and gift albums, Year in Review albums and Book of Me pages. There are also multiple other craft projects vying for my creative attention. I feel a very real self-imposed pressure to make progress in these endeavors.

Thus, when I sit down to scrap, I tell myself that I can’t afford to spend five hours working on one page. There is no time to try out a new technique or search the web for inspiration. Delighting in the treasures found within forgotten kits or experimenting with new combinations of elements and type must be avoided at the risk of falling further and further behind. After all, someone with so many stories and photos to scrap cannot justify wasting time in such unproductive pursuits!

In the words of John Eldredge (one of my favorite authors), I have let my attempts at efficiency replace my creativity.

If, like for me, scrapping has become another item on your to do list – another source of pressure and stress in your life – it is time to make a change. It is time to silence the voice that says, “Hurry up” and “You are wasting your time” and “At this rate, you will never finish anything”.

Instead, let’s give ourselves permission to play without an agenda, without a time clock, and without pressure. Let’s relax and have fun creating. Take a new DSU class, get inspired by the DET gallery, buy a kit outside your comfort zone and let yourself experiment, or join in the exploration of art journaling. Whatever you choose to do, remember to value the process as much as you value the product. Rein in your desire to be an efficient scrapper and find joy in the creative process.

Member Spotlight – Addie, a.k.a, addielee

    Addielee

Read more about her on the DSP Spotlight Page.

This month the Spotlight falls on talented DSP Member, Addie.

Addie finds her inspiration in nature, and of course her boys provide inspiration for a wealth of gorgeous layouts. A true digi-scrapper, she is constantly looking for those photographic opportunities that abound in everyday life: “I see great photos whereever I go and I love scrapping everything, from Sebastian wearing his sunglasses upside-down, to the long lineup to go through customs at the start of a holiday,” she says.

When asked if a photo or kit provides her starting point for a layout, Addie says that although she usually starts with the kit and then finds the photo to go with it, finding the perfect photo is not a problem as she confesses: “I have over 20, 000 photos to choose from so I can almost always find something!”

Addie says that although her preferred style is to imitate paper pages, she also really admires the graphic layout masters and aspires to be one, so you will find some graphic style layouts in her gallery too. Which is good news for anyone wanting to try their hand at scraplifting this DSP talent.

Congratulations Addie. Thank you for being our member spotlight. Be inspired by Addie’s Gallery, read more about her HERE then share the inspiration by taking part in the Scraplift The Spotlight Challenge for June.

Cutting Shapes from Digital Scrapbook Papers in Photoshop

In this tutorial I am going to demonstrate a quick and easy way to cut shapes from Digital Scrapbook Papers/Backgrounds in Photoshop. This method will work in all versions of Photoshop.

First I have opened the paper I am choosing to work with in Photoshop. I started with a paper is from my Floral Fancy Value Collection.

Then we need to create a new layer above the paper layer.

    1

I am going to cut a heart shape from my paper, and will use the custom shape tool to create the heart to cut my paper with. The custom shape tool can be found above the hand tool on the left hand tool bar. 1
Once you have clicked this tool you will see the custom shapes menu appear in the menu bar.  1
Now you need to ensure the Fill Pixels button is selected.

    1

Once the Fill Pixels button is selected you can go ahead and click on the Custom Shape Picker to choose your shape. Photoshop has several preinstalled shapes, but you can also create or add more. I will use a Photoshop custom shape for the purpose of this tutorial. The shape I am using is called Heart Card. 1
Click on the Heart Card Shape to select that custom shape. Click on your new layer to ensure it is selected. Using your mouse, click and drag over the canvas to create your shape. Hold down the SHIFT key while doing so to maintain aspect ratio. (keep the shape in the correct proportions) Holding down the SHIFT key is a good tip to maintain aspect ratio when resizing any object in Photoshop. 1
You can now see on the layers palette that there is a layer with your custom shape and the layer underneath with the paper. 1
Next we need to hold down the CTRL key and click on the shape layer to select the outline of the shape. When you do this you will see ‘marching ants’ appear around the outline of the shape. 1
Now we need to select the paper layer so that we can cut the shape from it.  Once the paper layer is selected, you can use the Edit>Copy command or press CTRL and C to copy. 1
Now we need to open a new canvas to paste the shape onto. 1
Ensure the background contents are selected as transparent and click on OK. Now use the Edit>Paste command or press CTRL and V to paste. You will now have your shaped paper in a new canvas, to save or drag to your layout. 1
Once you have dragged the shape onto your layout add a drop shadow to complete the look! 1

    Picture in Picture

This is a fun technique to use when shooting portraits. Take along a plain, white piece of paper or cardstock, cut to either 4x6, 5x7 or 8x10. Have your subject hold the paper, being careful to keep the fingers on just the edges. Shoot pictures with the paper being held both vertically and horizontally.

    1

After the photo shoot is over, choose the picture that you want to use as the 2nd picture. Find a picture with a blank card in it, that is held in the desired orientation. Open both pictures in Photoshop or your chosen image editing program. Use the rectangular selection tool or the straight line lasso to create a box inside the white card. Fill this area with color on a new layer. Use a clipping mask or trim your second picture so it fits inside the box.

    1

Now flatten and save as a jpg for a fun Picture in Picture. :)

A Perfect Gift for Grads and Teachers!

In my town, we have six high schools and two universities, with a handful of private vocational schools scattered about. Needless to say, there are a few graduation ceremonies happening around here this month! Digital Scrapbook Place can help you take care of all the grads in your life with a gift that's quick and easy! Start with a Make It Mine Photo Purse and personalize it with photos of the graduate's friends and school years. Fill it to the brim with goodies to get them through during long graduation ceremonies (candy, bottled water, fun beads & jewelry in school colors) and all-night parties (blanket or pashmina, more candy, pens for signing yearbooks, and a coffee card or two in the inside pocket)!

    Recipe Book

Creative and personal, a present that will be immediately enjoyed and appreciated!

This can easily be put together for those many end-of-the-year thank you presents for teachers and aides. Simply trade the graduation art work for cute pictures of the kids, and fill it with all the goodies teachers need and love: pens and paper, candy, coffee cards, water bottle.... hmmmm, really, the same things you gave to the grads!

    Gifting made easy!
