Letter from Team Digital – Heidi Kids

In just five short weeks we hit a big milestone in our family. Our youngest, Deakon, will be going to all day Kindergarten. But for now these rushing thoughts & emotions keep dancing in my head...YAY, No more kids at home! Eight hours of peace & quiet all to myself! Just think of all that digital designing I can do in a whole day. No more laundry piling up. My house will be spotless. And lastly, I will no longer have that excuse to find the time to exercise ever again! So does that mean with all this time that I will be rich, have a clean house AND skinny? I can dream, can't I.

But wait, where is my little buddy that goes shopping with me, takes the dogs for a walk, eats lunch with, snuggles & watches movies with on a rainy day? Oh that's right, he is my big boy now off at school with his friends. So then my thoughts turn to him at school... Is he having fun? Is he scared? Is he making friends? Is he getting in trouble (after all he is a boy)? Is he missing me? I'll sure be missing him!

I really don't remember thinking so much when his two sisters left for kindergarten. But everyone says it is different when your last one leaves for school. I think my feelings were different with each one of them. Our oldest, Raya, went off to kindergarten seven years ago. Wow! Seven years goes by fast! I think I was mostly excited for her. I know I wasn't worried at all & she wasn't either. It was like she was going on an adventure. And I couldn't wait to hear all about it when she got home. And I sure did as she is our chatterbox!

Three years later our middle one, Bria, was off to Kindergarten. It was a different story with her. She is our shy one. She likes to stick close to me & doesn't like big crowds. So I knew it was gonna be hard for her. And it was. There were tears shed on several occasions. I even shed a couple too. But she had some awesome teachers & made some wonderful friends. She still doesn't like big crowds but LOVES seeing her friends at school. She has come a long way!

So when September 1st comes, we'll all be ready to send our big boy on his journey. And my bittersweet thoughts will all be sorted out. I really have nothing to worry about. He is my independent one. And pretty excited to ride that bus with his big sister. Sure I will miss that little ball of energy, but I'm sure he will save some snuggle time in the evenings just for his mom!

2011 Christmas in July – Elizabeth WeaverCIJ

Our Christmas in July Party was a smash; hope you didn't miss a bit of it! We hosted some terrific challenges, super sales, and a twenty four hour CHAT! That's right; we were in the chat room for twenty four hours straight from Friday midnight to Saturday midnight on the 30th July! Each hour was filled with fun, games, scrapping, and sometimes a visit from Santa Claus who brought his bag of gifts, which contained CDs, coupons, and digital downloads! Those who received CD awards were: Dani B, Ograma, MaryRiley, Just-pjz, nekobus, Sammawow, Lauri, LKB, and Sands_Healy! Congratulations!

Even more exciting, we had some great Adobe prizes to give away, including a brand new Adobe Photoshop CS5 and an Adobe Photoshop Elements 9! Our winners for those were:

    Winner of Adobe Photoshop CS5:
    Elaine aka my2cats
    *and*
Winner of Adobe Photoshop Elements 9:
    Sherrill aka Sherrillbird.

Be sure and congratulate them when you see them around the site!

Hope you had a VERY Merry CIJ; we are already looking forward to next year's celebration!

Member Spotlight – ebears, a.k.a, Joan

    Joan

This month’s DSP Member Spotlight is ebears.

Joan describes herself as “An easy going person who is happy to take things as they come.” A philosophy that clearly works well for her, as she carries it through to her digi-scrapping saying: “There is no planning in my LOs - I just do what feels right at the time. It usually takes a couple of hours to do.” I think you will agree that “no planning” has never looked so good… as a glance at her inspirational gallery will show!

Joan says her inspiration comes from looking at other layouts in the gallery, and she mostly finds her starting point with a photograph and then looks for a kit that will match. With regards to her favorite layout, Joan says: “All my LOs are favourites while I am doing them. But the one that stands out is off my grandson titled I Am Legend.”

Thank you Joan for sharing your talent with DSP Members as the August 2011 DSP Member Spotlight. Once you have visited Joan’s Gallery and been inspired, join the Scraplift the DSP Spotlight Challenge for your chance to win a lucky draw DSP Store Voucher.

    Creating a sketch effect!

Using Photoshop CS3 and a photo of our choice I’m going to show you how to create a sketch effect of the photo, we’ll create two versions, a watercolour and pencil sketch. Using this technique can be a perfect way to make use of blurred or so so photos so you end up with attractive artwork.

Step 1 – Open your selected photo in Photoshop, I’m using a photo of an old forge from our trip to the Bay Of Islands. Then create a new document to the same dimensions as your photo, this should have a white background and be 300ppi. I have named and saved this new document as Sketch Effects Tutorial, you can name it anything you want.

    1

Step 2 – Select your photo by using Ctrl A and Copy then Paste into your new document, the photo should be the top layer. Next Duplicate your photo by right clicking on it and selecting Duplicate Layer from the drop down menu.

    1        2

Step 3 – Select the copy of the photo, this should be the one caller Layer 2 copy. Next we are going to Desaturate the photo by selecting Image / Adjustments / Desaturate (Shift + Ctrl + U).

    3        3a

Step 4 – Select the Desaturated Layer (layer 2 copy) and invert the image, to do this go to Image / Adjustments / Invert (Ctrl + I). Your image should look like this.

    4

Step 5 – Make sure you still having the layer 2 copy selected and choose Colour Dodge from the drop down menu of the Layer Blend Modes palette.

    5        5a

Step 6 – Next choose Gaussian Blur from the Filter Drop Down Menu. Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur, adjust this until you are satisfied with the result. I used 20.0 pixels Radius to achieve this watercolour sketch effect.

    6

To create a Pencil Sketch. Simply select your original photo image (Layer 2) and change the Blend Mode to Luminosity.

    7

Experiment by adjusting the Brightness / Contrast. I hope you enjoy using this tutorial.

EXCITING NEWS! A New Category in the store – HOME DECOR!

Digital Scrapbook Place now offers even more ways for you to put fine art on your walls!

Add DSP's fabulous Wall Word Art to the walls of your home, office, or vehicle! The Vinyl Wall Art is pre-pasted, pre-spaced, individually cut letters that press on your wall or any flat surface. The letters arrive on a sheet of paper which adheres to your wall. After pressing the sheet to your wall, you pull it back and only the lettering remains. The letters are a thin vinyl - equivalent to about 2-3 coats of paint, so they give you the look of hand-painted stenciling without the time and trouble.

DSP's Vinyl Wall Art works well for both renters and homeowners because it comes off when you are ready for it to. The lettering arrives as a single roll of text which you can apply all at once, or you can cut the sheet of lettering in any increment you choose and place them in a creative layout. The possibilities are limitless!

Print and frame your last name or any sentiment with the Wall-Worthy Alphabets - Mix 1 and Mix 2! Each greyscale letter is a full 4" x 6" in size. In your digital editing program, string the characters together and print at home or send to a photolab, then FRAME! You may also change the color to suit. These make perfect gifts for baby, wedding, teacher, anniversary, family reunion, and more! Check out the ready-made word prints as well, which currently include DREAM, JOY, LOVE, and FAMILY.

Look for other fantastic products in the new Home Decor category soon!
