Letter from Team Digital – Chris

September is the time for back to school...so what better time to talk about Digital Scrapbook University.

DSP has always offered classes and tutorials to sharpen all aspects of digital scrapbooking. From technical information about specific software products, to design principles and art theory, if its about scrapping and you want to learn it, you can learn it at DSP.

DSU has added new classes recently, in Photography and Art Journaling. And once you've taken the class, you can find continuing advice and challenges in the DSP forums on these, and many other subjects. Look for the 2012 schedule soon, and you might even find some new classes to pique your interest. If you have any suggestions for class topics you would like to see covered, feel free to send your ideas to dsu@digitalscrapbookplace.com

Back to school isn't just for your kids...its for you Scrappers, too!

Member Spotlight – Cheryl aka CherylB

    Cheryl

There is a saying that goes:  “dynamite comes in small packages”, and I am sure you will agree that this month’s DSP Spotlight falls on a dynamite DSP Member in CherylB .

Cheryl describes herself as an easy-going, positive person who enjoys encouraging people, and I am sure many DSP members will know this first hand.  She describes herself at trying to improve her scrapbooking skills, one layout at a time and says, “I find inspiration in the people in my life. I am blessed with a husband who encourages me in whatever I try to do, and children and grandkids who are available whenever an idea pops into my head. I also find great inspiration in the lovely kits, the artistic layouts and the caring people of DSP. They make it easy to try new creative ideas.”

Thank you, Cheryl, for sharing your talent with us at DSP this September as our member Spotlight. I am sure that you will find inspiration in Cheryl's gallery, read more about her on the Spotlight Page, then take part in the Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge thread before the end of September and you could be a random winner of a DSP store coupon!

    The Consistent Scrapper Challenge

During this past year I've run The Consistent Scrapper Challenge five times. If you are not familiar with the challenge here's the short version of it. My theory is that in order to be good at something, you have to do it consistently until you feel it is as much a part of you as getting up in the morning. "Being good at something" can mean being good at dribbling a ball or remembering state capitals, but it can also be being good at finding inspiration and transfer this into your creativity. So for The Consistent Scrapper Challenge this means taking the time to scrap every single day of the week, even if you don't feel like you are up to it.

Now last month I focused on getting layouts done fast because we all know that finding time is always an issue in our everyday life. So I figured this month I would focus a bit on getting inspired even when you feel like that creepy sensation of scrapper's block approaching or at least one of the ways you can do it.

It is said that Hunter S. Thompson re-typed F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms to learn about writing great novels. Now don't worry I won't ask you to re-type The Great Gatsby because then you will surely not have the time to scrap this month, but the idea behind is actually quite good. If you want to be a master, you have to start by copying the masters.

In our world that means making a scraplift. Making a scraplift is not only a great way of letting someone know that you admire their work but also a good opportunity to learn some new techniques. Maybe it's a new style you want to try out or perhaps just a certain type of photos you don't feel you know how to display perfectly. For whatever reason you can think of, scraplifting is a great way of fighting scrapper's block and being more consistent in your scrapping.

So my challenge for you this month is not only to make a layout every single day but make a scraplift every single day the rest of September. Go out and search through the galleries at DSP. There is so much inspiration to find right here within our own site. Make it a close copy, use it as inspiration, use it anyway you like but take the time to soak up in others creativity in order to find your own.

    The Story of Me

How often do you sit down and scrap about YOU?

I know that for myself, it's not often. I scrap about my son, of course. Events, holidays, and vacations. I tend to leave myself out of the picture though.

Yes, I, like many of us, hate being in front of the camera, I would much rather be the one twiddling the dials and pressing the shutter.

However, to scrap about you doesn't really mean that you need photos of yourself.

Last year I took up the challenge to do a Project:365. Not only did I take a photo a day, but I did 52 weekly layouts. While not many of those photos were OF me, a lot of them were ABOUT me. My favorite things, my home, my life in general. I'm not itching to take that challenge up again soon, but I did enjoy the results. The book I had printed will be something that we treasure in the years to come.

Here is one of the pages from my book:

P365

We can always scrap about our childhood. We were anything but camera shy at that age! What did you like best back then? Who was your best friend? What did you think you'd grow up to be? How many of your childhood dreams came true?

Here are pages by Erica, Elizabeth & Robyn:

    Erica Robyn   sharks

And speaking going back in time, how about Heritage pages? You wouldn't be the person that you are today without your family and heritage.
    These are by Elizabeth:

ancestors ggma

Do you have a special interest? Something that you are just obsessed with seeing/doing/learning more about? Something you collect? Get it down in your scrapbook!

I'm a self professed Potterphile. I love all things Harry Potter.  Here are two (of the many) pages about this interest of mine:

Books Pottered

Elizabeth loves gators. She's visited many gator parks and collects gator items. She also likes to collect Barbie dolls, and loves all things England (has visited there three times).
    Gators Skipper   England

Hobbies anyone? I'm certain that most of us have hobbies besides digital scrapbooking (and photography!). For me, it's baking. I love the way my house feels cozier when there is something homemade in the oven. The smells, the calls I hear from the other room, “Are you baking something?”, and of course, the finished project is nothing to complain about either.

Bakerella

I enjoy baking so much, that at the suggestion of Lauren (technically her husband suggested it), I opened my very own baking blog, Sugar Bean Bakers at http://sugarbeanbakers.blogspot.com last year. Here is a page that I scrapped about baking and blogging.

    SugarBean

There are many other way that we can express who WE are through our pages. Our books needn't be full of photos of ourselves just to show the journey. A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but with your scrapbooks you have the opportunity to choose the words it says.

What story do you have to tell?
