The Battle of Stuff
I'm not sure where this is going - but Stuff has been occupying my mind lately.
I am so overwhelmed with Stuff that I haven't had time to do anything.
You see I moved recently and learned that 30+ years worth of stuff that
packed every nook and cranny of a five bedroom house doesn't fit into a
two bedroom condo that is 1/3 the size and does not have the garage
that doubled as a massive storage unit.
So, I have had to face the reality of downsizing. I actually thought I
had done quite well in my downsizing efforts the last year I spent
living in the five-bedroom, until I actually had to unpack. Then I
learned something really amazing. I no longer owned Stuff. Stuff was
now the Alpha Dog and it OWNED ME! It has been quite a battle between
me and the Stuff, but I think I am winning.
You see, I have discovered something! Owning less stuff means it is
easier to clean house. Owning less stuff means things have places
instead of boxes. Owning less stuff means less dusting. Owning less
stuff means things don't get as untidy. All in all, owning less stuff
means I have more free time to scrap (well, I will when I have WON the
battle!) |
|
I have 20 more boxes to go before I have won completely and all things
will have their own spot. I still have loads of things, but they all
have their own little place I can send them to when I am done with them
and they are happy there and not too crowded.
So I highly recommend doing away with stuff. So you can scrap more!

Friday Feature is a new conversation every Friday! Come back each week
to see what the topic is - it will be different every time!
Each week designer, Elizabeth Weaver will throw out a new topic. All
you have to do is read it and add your friendly two cents! There will
be a variety of topics,
but they will always be a way to highlight YOUR personality or choices!
Let's learn about each other!
Conversations have been varied and entertaining. Topics for May
included, WHAT phrases did your parents use that your generation has forgotten or changed?
What the heck was I taking a picture of? If you could time travel, would you
travel to the future or the past? and What movie or books would you like to be transported into as a character?
What will be next? Comeand see! Topics will usually be started around midnight Thursday DSP time
because that way it's still Friday for our Australian and New Zealand friends! See you in the Friday Feature!

Beautiful location inside and out. We'll see what's in bloom if we want

June Member Spotlight – Renee aka renee s
|
|

|
June's Member Spotlight is the amazing and talented Renee – aka renee s.
"I scrap so I can tell my family's story, through my pages," says Renee. A glance at this DET 12 and 13 Alumni's gallery will tell you that aside from layouts that are gorgeous, Renee really does have a very real passion for journaling, with the story taking pride of place in many pages.
After sharing her journaling in her beautiful layouts at DSP, you might think Renee is an extrovert, but she denies this.
"In reality, I am very shy and it takes me a long time to feel comfortable enough around a person to be able to joke with them and for them to see my inner-silliness," she says.
Renee gravitates towards paper-style layouts but admits that she does like "breaking out once in a while and doing a graphic page, just for the sheer fun and beauty of it."
|
|
Does she have a favorite? "I think my all-time favorite layout would have to be
Catching Dreams.
I just love the photo of our youngest son in it, and the dreaminess of the page, and I hope to some day have it made into a canvas to hang on our wall."
Congratulations and thank you Renee for sharing you wonderful talent as our DSP Member Spotlight for June 2012.
Read more about Renee on the Spotlight Page and visit Renee's Gallery then join Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge for your chance to win a lucky draw DSP Store Voucher.
This June, take your inspiration from Renee and don’t just create a lovely
looking layout – use it to tell the story behind your photographs.

The talented DSP Designers create fabulous DSP CDs, Mega kits and Club Digital. The amazing amount of work the
designers put into these products is what keeps the site running so we can have our forums, our
store and all the wonderful things that make up DSP!
Two of the best deals on the site for your scrapping collection are the fabulous CDs/Mega Kits and Club Digital
and of course we have great challenges to go along with them.
When you buy the new monthly featured CD or Mega Kit, you can complete as many
layouts as you want for any challenge using the CD or Mega Kit and then
post a link to the layout in the CD and Mega Kit Challenge. At the end of the month, each unique layout goes into a drawing for
$3.99, so if you enter 10 layouts, you have 10 chances to WIN! Best of all, you can double up, triple up or MORE with chances at prizes in other challenges too.
Similarly when you jump into the Club Digital Challenge , you can earn a chance at a $9.99 draw. That's more than you
PAID for one month – what fantastic value for your money!
There's no end of challenges to keep you motivated at DSP – and these are a couple of great
ones. We look forward to seeing your layouts in these great challenges! |

Tutorial: Enhancing a Simple Shape with Dodge and Burn in PhotoShop
I am using PhotoShop CS5, but this will work in all PS versions. I hope you enjoy creating a simple shape element!
* First go to File > New > and create an image file at about 800x800 pixels at 300 ppi. A white background color is easiest to work on. This way you will be able to zoom in if you need to without much distortion.
* Select a medium green color on your Color Picker in the Foreground area.
* Above the white BG layer, make a new Transparent layer, and then select the Custom Shape Tool. I have selected a Snail shape that came with the program.
* On the new transparent layer, hold down the mouse and drag out your shape to fill the image size. Then select the pen tool.
* Right click and select the "Fill Path" option with the Foreground Color.
Then, hit enter so that the black outline goes away. You should now have a green snail shape as below, Yay!

* First we are going to create a little bit of shading on the snail with the "Burn Tool". Have the Burn Tool options set on a Soft Round brush, Midtones Range, at about 50% exposure. Now, if you have a reference photo of a snail, it will help you a
little with the shell shape and such... but if you don't have one, it's ok, you can use your imagination!
* With the burn Tool, add the bottom of the shell and the swirl inside the shell area. When you draw with the Burn Tool set at an opacity level below 100%, you want to try to do each stroke only once, otherwise your shades will overlap and become darker in the overlapped areas. The below pic shows the size of my Burn Tool Brush that I am using
compared to the Snail. (The Grey Dot). Remember, it is a soft brush though, not a hard sided brush.
Hint: If you mess up, or if you don't like one of the strokes you made, you can undo it by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Z and it will undo the last action. You can do it several times to go back several actions.

* Now, since we have our basic shapes drawn in,lets do some Shading.
Still with the Burn Tool selected and the same settings, darken the
areas below the shell and around the underside of the neck, antennae
and tail. Also, darken in the swirl a bit. Think of the direction of
lighting while you shade. Most DSP elements are lit from
120°... Upper Left side. You will probably need to adjust the
brush size up and down for different parts of the shading.
Here is my shaded Snail. You should have something similar.

* Time for some Highlighting! Select the "Dodge Tool" and use the same settings as we had for the
Burn Tool. Remember your lighting would come from the Upper Left and
then start adding highlights to the shell and swirls, the upper side of
the neck and head, and the tail and antennae. You can go over it
several times in the same area to make it lighter and lighter and also
to blend with the shading parts. When done, you should have something
similar to this:

This is so cool right?!! :)
* We need some eyes! Get your Burn Tool again. Use a small size brush and draw two
The eyes can be dots for a more cutesy critter. I made a little smile too.
* Lets add some depth to our new cute element.
* Go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow and set it on
'Multiply' at 44 Distance, 0 Spread and 44 Size.
* Now, go to Layer Style again, Inner Shadow > Pick a bright Red... this will create a
nice Brown color when it mixes with the Green of the Snail... Set the
Inner Shadow at Multiply 75%, 0 Distance, 0 Choke and 133 Size.
* You can play with the layer styles and all the options to create some really nice effects too!
I hope you enjoyed creating a simple shape element!
* Here is my finished Snail:
