Installing Fonts on a PC

The Font Thing is a free font organizing program. You can download it here.

When you open The Font Thing, it looks like this showing all of the fonts installed in your Windows Fonts folder.

If you install all the fonts you own into your windows font folder, it can easily bog down your computer, slow the opening of some programs, and will be hard to find the fonts you really need. If you uninstall fonts directly from your windows font folder, it will permanently delete the font off of your computer.

For these reasons, I keep all of my actual fonts in a "My Fonts" and install and uninstall all of my fonts from there.

In The Font Thing (TFT) you can not only browse what is in your windows font folder, but you can also browse other folders that you have fonts in (like your "My Fonts" folder). Click on the Browse Tab, and find your "My Fonts" folder.

I have all of my fonts not only separated into categories (to easily find certain styles of fonts) but also by foundry (if I'm looking for a certain font and I know the maker). I quickly find the font that I am searching for, and click install

When you install a font in puts a little windows symbol next to it, showing it is installed

The font will now be copied to your windows font folder and will be available in any program.

To uninstall your font, find the font you want, and click uninstall.

This will delete this font from windows font folder, but it will still be in your "My Fonts" folder. Notice the little windows symbol disappears.

If you don't want to keep all your fonts in separate folders, you can also categorize them within the font thing.
