Tutorial: How to Install Fonts on a Mac (OSX)

by Rene Bross

In previous Mac operating systems you had to drag the font to the system font folder. In OSX you now use the included program- Font Book. It’s still just as easy and now you can organize your fonts too, if you wish.

In this tutorial we will be loading a font called Jl Phonal. It’s a black letter style font.

I have already purchased and downloaded the font to my desktop.

Go to your Applications folder and open Font Book. Once opened, the window will look something like this:

Under the Font category, you will see your current list of installed fonts. The right side colum gives you a real nice preview of the font, which you can enlarge with the slider on the right.

At the very bottom of the Font column, in the center of the window, you will see a button with a “+”. Click the + and your finder window will pop up. Select Desktop and then select your font to be installed. Then click “open”.

Your font is now installed!! It’s that easy!! And now the Jl Phonal font appears in the preview window:

Now you can quit Font Book and your newly installed font will be available to use in your other software programs.
