Tutorial: How to Color Doodles in Photoshop
By Rene’ Bross

To change the black doodle outline to a color:

1. Open the doodle image file and select the magic wand tool.

2. Click on the black area that you want to color. The moving marquee will now be around your black area.

3. Click on your foreground color swatch and choose a color. I have chosen a blue color.

4. Go to Edit/Fill and with “foreground color” selected, click ok. You can also play with the opacity if you want a lighter, less opaque version of your color.

5. That’s it. Your outline is now a different color.

To fill your doodle with color:

1. Open the doodle image file and select the magic wand tool.

2. Click on the inside transparent area you want to fill with color. The moving marquee will now be around your transparent area. If you would like to color multiple areas, hold down your shift key and select as many areas as you want. I have selected each petal.

3. Click on your foreground color swatch and choose a color. I have chosen a blue color.

4. Go to Edit/Fill and with “foreground color” selected, click ok. You can also play with the opacity if you want a lighter, less opaque version of your color.

5. That’s it. Your petals are now a different color.

To Paint behind your doodle with color to create a hand painted effect:

1. Open the doodle image file. In the layers palatte, select New Layer, name it color 1 or whatever you wish and move this layer behind the first layer (Layer 0).

2. Select the brush tool and choos a brush. For a water color effect, I have chosen “Watercolor Textured Surface” brush, size 45.

3. Set your opacity to 50%, or whatever you prefer.

4. Then Paint on your doodle. Because your layer is behind the doodle layer, it will automatically paint behind it. Don’t worry about staying inside the lines. Painting outside the lines gives a more fun, freeform look.

If you want to paint with another color, create another new layer and do it again.

5. That’s it. Have fun painting!!
