Tutorial: How To Make a Folded Corner in Photoshop

In the following tutorial you will learn a fairly simple method for creating a realistic looking folded corner.

1. Open the item you wish to fold the corner of. In this example we will be using a 12x12 background paper. Duplicate the document (Image>Duplicate) and close the original, so that you are working from a copy and not altering the original document. Double click on the "Background" layer to change it into an actual layer.

2. From your toolbox select the Polygonal Lasso tool. If it is not visible, right click on whichever lasso tool is showing and select the Polygonal Lasso from the menu.

3. Draw a triangular selection around one corner of your paper, making sure that your third side meets up with your first point. (Image below shows a zoomed in view of the corner of the paper.)

4. Right-click within your selection and choose "Layer via Cut". This will place your triangular selection on it's own layer.

5. Now you want to turn your corner "over". Edit>Transform>Rotate 180 to flip it over. This is the point at which you will need to get a bit "artistic". Using your Dodge and Burn tools, located on your tool palette, give your corner some shadows and highlights, so that it looks like it's actually folded or curled over. Shade along the outer edges, and highlight through the center, a bit like this. (The background layer has been turned off in this image.)

At this point you can add a drop shadow, and further play with that until you achieve your desired result, also possibly adding something like a brad to "secure" your corner to your paper. To use this on a layout, you have a few options, two of which are shown below. Use your imagination, and have fun with it!
