Transparent PNG Files in Paint Shop Pro 8 & 9:
by Emma Powell

One of the advantages of PNG files is the transparent background allowing the layer behind it to show through, as with the first button. Often Paint Shop Pro will not open a PNG file with background transparency, but rather be surrounded by a white or black background, as with the second button.

To fix this problem and allow PNG files to have a transparent background, adjust the PNG preferences under File>Preferences>File Format Preferences.

fig 2

In this dialog, click the PNG tab to view its options. Enable the Load and save transparency from / to alpha channel. If this is already enabled and PNG files are still not loading properly, disable it instead.

fig 3

Your PNG files should now open properly. If you're still having trouble, please post in the Tutorial Forum here
